Thickener

Thickener sedimentation filter device is a thickening device with continuous operation, during a process in which slurry (a mixture of solid and liquid) is divided into two streams including:
1) A denser flow, including more solid particles, called under flow
2) A clear liquid flow, including solid particles less than 1% and in some cases less than 300 PPM, called Thickener overflow flow.
The force that creates this separation is the force of gravity and the difference in the density of the phases (liquid phase and solid phase) is the cause of this separation. It should be noted that the size of solid particles that can be concentrated and separated in the thickener are in the range of 0.5 mm and less.

1) The sedimentation tank that provides the area and volume required for settling solids. The size of this surface and volume should be large enough to allow the solids to settle faster than the liquid rises.
2) The distribution and guiding system that can distribute the incoming feed in the best way in the volume of the tank. This system is equipped with a hydraulic mechanism that distributes the incoming feed with a rotating speed of 15 to 20 revolutions per minute.
3) A system to collect the overflow clear liquid and a transfer system to collect and transfer the thickener underflow solids.

The body material of thickener tanks in small to medium sizes is generally made of steel and iron and in larger sizes is concrete. In mining processes, thickening operation by thickener is used in both concentrate production process and water recovery process from tailings.

Also, in this operation, flocculating chemicals called flocculants are used to connect fine particles to each other, to create larger particles and finally settle more easily. And the presence of paddles in the thickener helps to direct the solid particles to the center of the tank for sedimentation, as a result, the solids at the bottom of the thickener have an easier discharge.

Solid feed concentration in slurry is an important and effective variable in the selection and design of thickeners. Thickeners or clarifiers are designed in two forms: bridged and based. For small thickeners with a diameter of 15 to 40 meters, the paddle and the hydraulic mechanism are placed on a bridge-like structure, which has a rotational movement in the tank. For thickener tanks with a diameter of up to 70 meters, paddles and hydraulic mechanism are placed on the central base, and the bridge is used only for access and maintenance of the feed pipe.
